Cannabidiol as a Natural Remedy for Arthritis

Hand Pain

Arthritis can be one of the most painful ailments we humans experience.

Resulting from inflammation of the joints or simply wear and tear as we grow older, arthritis causes pain, swelling, stiffness, and, eventually, loss of movement in a limb..

While there is no single natural remedy for arthritis, there are several non-prescription ways patients can relieve the pain caused by the disease. Cannabidiol oil or hemp oil is one such natural remedy.

Cannabidiol, Hemp Oil, and Medical Marijuana

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound (one of hundreds of “cannabinoids”) found in cannabis (It is not the cannabinoid responsible for giving users a high — that’s THC. Read this article on CBD vs THC for in-depth details). It is sometimes called “Hemp Oil” as well, as it can be extracted from hemp, which is also a type of cannabis plant.

You may also find CBD from “medical marijuana” plants. Though they may be similar, CBD oil extracted from hemp has no THC to speak of and is legal in every state, while that extracted from marijuana may have a percentage of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). This makes CBD extracted from medical marijuana is not legal in every state.

While most recent news about CBD discusses its usefulness in treating intractable epilepsy in young children, CBD has been in use as an anti-inflammatory supplement for several years. Studies carried out on mice have shown that CBD does reduce inflammation and can provide relief from pain.

CBD for Arthritis

Doctors often treat arthritis with anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers, which provide the same relief that natural hemp oil can provide. Unfortunately, some of these medications can have troublesome side effects.  An increasing number of arthritis patients are seeking a natural remedy for arthritis to give them relief without the unwanted side effects.

But is CBD really effective as a treatment for arthritis?

A controlled test conducted by the British Royal National Hospital in January 2006 was the first controlled trial to investigate (using Sativex) whether cannabis extracts could effectively treat rheumatoid arthritis. Over a five-week period, investigators reported an improvement in pain when moving and resting. Patients also slept better and experienced less inflammation and less intense pain.

The study also found that those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis may be able to slow the progress of the disease using CBD. A separate study also linked CBD to slowed progression of arthritis.

Though there is still a need for more research, you can use cannabidiol-rich cannabis extracts as a natural treatment for arthritis today. The studies conducted found no significant side effects.

Other Natural Remedies for Arthritis

There are many other natural ways to treat arthritis. These include using heat and cold,  stress management techniques, and even magnets. While most of these techniques work for rheumatoid arthritis, some can work for other forms of the disease as well.

Patients can also try a range of herbs to treat the pain and inflammation of arthritic joints. These include ginger, turmeric, and willow bark, to name a few.

As with all medication, patients should consult their doctors before starting anything new, especially if they are pregnant.
